Solar Heater You can enjoy the pool for a
longer swimming season if you have a way to keep the water warm. If you
currently have a pool heater and are looking for a cheaper alternative, pool
solar panels are a very economical way to heat water using solar energy. They
are competitively priced with other types of pool heaters.
Most often, solar panels are mounted on the ground on your
roof, which can be done if your roof is properly lit. South is the ideal
direction for panel fronts, although anywhere between 45 degrees east or south
west is fine as long as there is no shade. They can be placed on the floor if
you have the space and at least one manufacturer makes a rack-mountable system.
As a rule, the area of your collector should be at least half the surface of
the pool.
How does a solar pool heater work? The water simply flows
into the collector where it is heated by solar radiation and then returns to
the pool. The usual process is for a pool pump to be used to force water out of
the pool through the pool filter and then into the solar collector. There it
circulates because it is heated by the sun. After heating through the
chlorinator and regular heaters, if any, return to the pool. In very hot
climates, when the pool water becomes too warm, the water can be circulated
through the collector at night to cool it.
Since most pools are not used during the winter months,
collectors are usually not glazed or covered with a glass cover for insulation.
Unglazed collectors are made of heavy rubber or UV stabilized polyethylene,
making them lighter and less expensive than metal collectors. Collectors
usually raise the water temperature by 10 degrees or more.
Solar pool heaters are less expensive than gas heaters; They
outlast gas heaters and heat pumps, are highly efficient and free to operate.
They require almost no maintenance as long as the chlorine and pH levels in the
pool are maintained, unlike gas or electric heaters which require yearly
maintenance. They are very durable and usually last 12 to 20 years.
If you choose to install the system yourself, you must be
very knowledgeable about plumbing and electrical wiring. Most manufacturers
provide installation instructions along with a video that you can use.
